Student Profile: Joyce Dovi

Joyce Dovi

MSc in International Business Management

Joyce Dovi has faced many adventures in her life. She has already climbed mountains, travelled through jungles and built classrooms in her native Ghana. Now she is facing a completely different adventure as she embarks on a Master’s course at the University of Bedfordshire.

She enjoyed many of these experiences working in deprived areas of Ghana where she helped local communities as part of the Duke of Edinburgh awards scheme for which she received bronze and silver awards. Her gold award was presented to her by Ghanaian President, John Kufour.

Joyce, from the Ewe tribe in Southern Ghana, always wanted to go to university, as her parents are both teachers and often spoke to her about the importance of getting a good education.

After seeing a TV advert for a Higher Education Fair, Joyce decided to find out more about studying a Master’s in the UK. She had always wanted to study in this country, as a British qualification is regarded very highly in Ghana. At the fair she saw a presentation by representatives from the University of Bedfordshire who interviewed her before offering her a place.

She said: “Applying to the University was straight-forward. Staff were really helpful and spent time dealing with the British High Commission to help me arrange my study visa.”

After accepting her place at the University, Joyce decided to head for London, as she wanted to live in the capital city. The University is located just 30 miles from the centre of London with several trains running between Luton and London every hour.

The 26-year-old enjoys living in London, because it’s easy to travel around the city, visit the sites, and go shopping in some of Europe’s finest shopping districts.

Joyce has progressed well on her course and likes carrying out presentations with fellow classmates. She also enjoys taking part in debates during her seminars, and exchanging ideas with other students.

She is impressed with the facilities at the University. She said: “The facilities at the University are excellent. The IT facilities, the library and the lecture rooms all provide an ideal learning environment. Living away from the town is no barrier to learning because lecture notes are available on-line and you can renew library books and order journals electronically.”

After graduating, she would like to work in senior management for an international firm or for a large consultancy.
