Jacquelyne Obura is a mum, a teacher, a degree student and she has ambitions to set up an educational project in the UK.

The 29-year-old from Kisumu, in Kenya, wants to start a charity scheme to provide experience, funding and exchange ideas between schools from England and Kenya. She believes this will help Kenya grow through academic improvement and will improve the stability of the country through continual development.

For now she is working hard to achieve a first class degree at Luton.

Jacquelyne would like to study an MA in Art and Design after finishing her degree. She then wants to work as a teacher. She already has teaching qualifications from Kenya and has worked as a supply teacher in the UK.

Jacquelyne has two daughters: Candy, aged five, and one-year-old Cindy. She said: “I have two young children, and Candy who is at school, is really enjoying and benefiting from going to school in England. I think this inspired me to keep following my dreams of becoming a teacher.”

Luton’s diverse population attracted Jacquelyne to study here. Her friends recommended Luton after they studied here. She said: “I’m really enjoying my course and I like the accessibility of the lecturers who are very supportive and give practical advise.

“Luton is very different from Kenya because it is a multicultural town. It is an easy place to speak to people and you can buy African food very easily. I didn’t expect to be able to pick up fruit, veg and meats which are native to Africa.”

Jacquelyne has found the international office at the University very useful and they helped her apply for her scholarship, a scheme offered by the University to help provide funding to international students.

When she is not studying, Jacquelyne coaches a female basketball team. She would like to join the women’s basketball team at Luton, and would also like to try out rugby as she has never tried this before. “I love trying new experiences, and rugby looks very interesting indeed,” she said.
