MSc Finance and Business Management

Tolkyn Abdikarimova

Tolkyn Abdikarimova from Kazakhstan always wanted to study in the UK. After visiting her sister in Southampton and travelling around the country, she decided to move to Cambridge.

She chose the University of Luton because of its proximity to Cambridge and because of its excellent reputation for teaching.

Tolkyn is studying an MSc in Finance and Business Management at the University’s Putteridge Bury campus – an Edwardian mansion situated four miles from the town centre.

She said: “ The teaching at Luton is very focused. You are taught practical skills which you will use in the workplace.

“The Putteridge Bury campus is a beautiful place to study. The grounds are so picturesque, it is like a postcard.”

The 28-year-old from Almaty in southern Kazakhstan, graduated in Accountancy and Auditing in her home country in 1999.

She has spent the last six years working for an International company called Globalink, where she has worked her way up to Senior Accountant.

She said: “I have spent a long time in the same office and I knew it was time to further my studies. I always wanted to study abroad, and was drawn to the UK because I have family living here.”

Tolkyn believes that working for Globalink has given her the chance to learn more about people from all around the world, and has helped her adapt to the English way of life.

“I love living in the UK. Everyone is really pleasant and happy to help. The pace of life is quite different here.

People seem to have a lot more leisure time. I go to the gym three times a week, and I don’t think I would have time to do this back home.”

After she graduates, Tolkyn hopes to continue working for Globalink at its new London branch – a city in which she has always wanted to work.

She spends her spare time either working out at the gym, visiting her sister in Southampton or travelling around the country visiting the historic sites.

She added: “I love to spend my spare time travelling. Cambridge is a beautiful city with a rich history, as does the rest of England.

I will be travelling to France in the winter. Luton has great travel links if you want to explore the UK or jet off abroad.”
