Julia Shmeleva is studying for an MSc Business and Management course at the University of Bedfordshire.
She came to the University after receiving a special scholarship from the Russian President Vladimir Putin. From St. Petersburg, Julia was one of just 100 students who received the prestigious scholarship last year. She had a choice of several universities all over the world, but chose the University of Bedfordshire after receiving recommendations from our alumni, Vladimir Sergunin and Oleg Konyukhov.
She graduated from the Saint - Petersburg State University of Engineering and Economics (Russia) with a special diploma in Finance. Julia was was actively involved in student life at her university and was the president of international student organisation AIESEC. Julia is also doing her PhD programme in Russia, whilst studying for her Master's at the University of Bedfordshire. The 24-year-old says she has settled quickly into her course and finds the subject areas really interesting and useful.
"I always wanted to get an education abroad, especially in Great Britain. English ways of teaching and student life differ from Russian very much. I would like to work in the international relations or business fields. The University of Bedfordshire gives me the unique opportunity to meet people from various countries. This is really a multicultural University".
She is living in one of the University’s postgraduate halls of residence and shares with students from Egypt, Jamaica, India, Ireland and Nepal. She has also had the opportunity to know other cultures and understand different people with different religions and life style, as well as finding areas of common interests and building effective relationships. She has made a lot of friends from all over the world and this has made her life more exciting and interesting.
In her spare time Julia enjoys dancing and travelling. So far she has visited several places in the UK, and is looking to explore more of the UK when her studies allow. Julia would like to continue her studies at PhD level in Russia after completing her Master's at the University of Bedfordshire.
