With two degrees and a busy social life, Svetlana Kravtsova’s life in Russia was nearly perfect… except there was something missing.
Weekends were often packed with Scout activities and trips to places like Slovakia, Ireland and the Czech Republic. A stint as a tour guide in St Petersburg, Russia, was incredibly rewarding and matched Svetlana’s outgoing personality.
Between all of this Svetlana even found enough time to study for two degrees and before long, she had a successful career as a translator in the gaming industry.
Svetalana said: “I worked in a development studio in St Petersburg, Russia. I had a BA in Linguistics from the Institute of Foreign Languages and a BA in Law, which helped me to translate legal documents. I enjoyed my job but I wanted to learn new skills, at Master’s degree level.”
Keen to improve her English, Svetlana set her sights on the UK and Bedfordshire’s unique programme of study had instant appeal. Svetlana explained: “I was attracted to Bedfordshire as it’s a new university with impressive facilities and a diverse range of students so I could study and improve my language skills.”
Since joining Bedfordshire in September 2007, Svetlana has been studying towards an MA in Intercultural Communications, to further her career ambitions. Svetlana explained: “Ultimately, I’d love to work in training and to develop intercultural training programmes for businesses. I’d also like to give something back and teach.”
Head and shoulders above the rest
The standards of teaching at Bedfordshire have really impressed Svetlana. She said: “The lecturers are professional and approachable and I really appreciate the University’s ‘open door policy,’ so I can talk with tutors about project ideas and challenges.
“The UK educational system is very different to Russia’s. Here in Bedfordshire I can put theory into practice and study on a campus with fantastic facilities - far better than those we have back home.
“My advice to anyone interested in studying at Bedfordshire is to never be afraid of lecturers, talk to them and you will get the advice you need to succeed.”
