Xiao Chuan, originally from North East China, had opted to do a BSc in Biochemistry at Shinshu University in Japan. It was one of the busiest times in her life; attending classes from early morning till late evening, and working part-time throughout meant no time for a social life for almost four years. After graduating she was up for a fresh challenge and decided that an MA in Mass Communications at the University of Bedfordshire would be perfect.
Having previously worked as a journalist for a Chinese newspaper published in Japan, Xiao Chuan realised that biochemistry is not an area where she would like to excel; she was determined to change the career path and media was her first choice. Her brother, also a student at Bedfordshire, had spread a good word about the university and did not hesitate in recommending it as a great stepping stone to start a new career. Bedfordshire’s excellent reputation in the media field was another key factor behind Xiao’s decision to choose Bedfordshire from amongst other higher education institutions in the UK.
The 24 year-old was not disappointed with her choice: ‘I am studying on Luton campus which is modern, clean and has got a state-of-the-art media centre. Unlike in Japan, the learning resource centre is open till late night so I always have time to catch up with my assignments’.
Xiao Chuan was used to the ‘lecturers talk- students take notes’ way of teaching but discovered a completely different style of teaching in the UK. ‘It was very strange to see students debating and interacting with professors during the class. But I adjusted to the new system fairly quickly and now I am more involved in those discussions. I definitely prefer learning new things this way’.
After graduating, Xiao Chuan plans going back to China and starting a career in the media field. Working for the largest national TV station, CCTV, would be the icing on the cake. Knowing that CCTV considers University of Bedfordshire as one of the leading education institutions in the UK and sends their staff members to pursue undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, it is only a matter of time before Xiao Chuan’s dream comes true.
