Tariq

Tariq Al Marzouqi from Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is studying an MBA.

He is on paid sabbatical leave from his job as Head of Public Relations with the Federal National Council in UAE, which is responsible for examining all proposed federal legislation.

The 26-year-old has worked for the Federal National Council since 1997, and in 2004 was promoted to his current role which involves working directly for the General Secretary and the Members of Parliament (MPs).

His role ranges from dealing with different media channels to gain publicity and organising events and exhibitions for the Federal National Council, to arranging programmes for visitors and liaising directly with the General Secretary and the Speaker of the Parliament.

Tariq secured a scholarship in 2005 after meeting senior members of staff who offered him an opportunity to study at the institution. He chose the University of Bedfordshire because of its excellent reputation and closeness to London.

He said: “I met with members of the international office from Luton campus when they visited UAE and I was very impressed with what they had to say. I carried out research on the Internet about Luton and other universities, and found it compared favourably.”

Travelling is his passion and his job has given him the chance to visit many countries around the world, where he has met with MPs, prime ministers and presidents.

Studying in Luton has given Tariq the chance to meet different people from around the world, and he says this has given him an excellent opportunity to find out more about different attitudes and cultures.

His course is designed to encourage teamwork and gives students the chance to discuss and work together to produce real outcomes for the business problems, which he enjoys. To keep his career on track, Tariq often returns to the UAE to organise conferences and events and catch up with his colleagues.

After graduating, he would like to move into PR management at the Federal National Council and believes his studies will help him achieve this.

He said: “The combination of my work experience and the MBA will really helping me to achieve my ambition to be a PR manager. The course is very strong on leadership skills - something that is need to succeed in business and the PR industry.”

In his spare time Tariq enjoys playing football and has already made use of the football pitch at the Vauxhall Recreation Centre which is close to the Luton campus at Park Square and is used daily by staff and students.
