Arturo Amor has rubbed shoulders with some of the most high-profile stars in the American film industry, including Tom Cruise and Samuel L Jackson, and has also photographed some of the world’s top supermodels.
From Mexico, Arturo spent several years working for one of the country’s leading national consumer magazines, Quien. During his time at the magazine, he attended the Oscars, several celebrity parties and film premieres in Mexico City, as well as photographing some well-known supermodels.
Despite being surrounded by so many famous faces, Arturo always wanted to return to education to study for a Master’s, and decided it was the right time to do postgraduate study.
He said: “I decided to attend a Higher Education fair and was drawn to the University of Bedfordshire’s stand because the logo grabbed my attention! After looking at the courses in more detail and chatting to representatives, I decided to find out more about the MA Fine Art.
“I visited Luton with my family for a couple of months to see if we liked the area and we all settled in well. Coming from a busy city it was nice to live in a quieter area. The local school had performed well in its Ofsted inspections so this was important as I have a young son.”
Arturo studied for a degree in Graphic Design in the 70s, and although he considered staying on to study a Master’s, he decided to move into employment for financial reasons.
He spent a year working for a Mexican airline and travelled around the world before starting a career in freelance photography. He combined this with his graphic design skills and set up a small media company with a friend creating marketing material for local firms.
After spending several years working as a freelance photographer, he took up the post of editorial photographer for the national newspaper The Reformer. He worked for the commercial section producing marketing designs for clients. He also worked as a photographer with the news desk. He moved from the newspaper to Quien in the late 90s.
His course enabled him to develop new skills and expand his knowledge – he particularly enjoyed working closely with PhD students, which gave him a broader insight into Fine Art.
For his final year project, he recreated artefacts which had been unearthed at an archaeological dig. He used abstract art to recreate these artefacts with plaster casts and paper mache. Arturo displayed his work at the hat Factory gallery in Luton.
He finished his Master’s in July 2006, and has since taken a research post at the University’s Faculty of Health and Social Sciences. He would like to work in archaeological research and also plans to continue his photography in the UK.
