Marcela has big ambitions after she graduates. She would like to work for a large international firm and plans to go “right to the top”.
From Bogota in Colombia, Marcella attended a Higher Education Recruitment Fair in February to find out more about studying overseas.
She always wanted to study at a UK university, because a UK degree is held in high regard in her home country, and because of the exciting stories she had heard from her mum about seeing the Beatles in England in the 60s!
Marcela quickly became involved in student life and became the course representative for her year. This involves representing the views of her classmates in formal meetings to University staff. She has also helped out at the chaplaincy, which holds special events throughout the year for students of all faiths.
She is a big fan of museums and enjoys shopping at Camden Market, because of the variety of quirky items for sale. She developed her flair for shopping whilst working at the world-famous Selfridges in London.
Since moving to Luton, Marcela has made friends from all around the world including students from Nigeria and India.
She said: “Coming to the University of Bedfordshire has given me the opportunity to make friends with people from all over the world. In Colombia you tend to only meet Colombian or American students but Luton is more diverse with a range people from many cultures.”
Marcela was surprised with the level of support she received as an international student. The University offers weekly seminars to improve study skills for international students, as well as academic writing and conversational classes. She said these classes were a great help and made it a lot easier to settle into university life.
Marcela loves the English sense of humour and is a big fan of British comedy shows. She also enjoys travelling and has spent the summer exploring Europe’s culture and heritage.
