Points Based System

The Points Based System has been split into 5 Tiers. Each tier covers different visa routes for entering and remaining in the UK.

Tier 1

This tier is designed to allow those who are highly skilled to come to or remain in the UK for a number of years. Some categories within this tier can lead to indefinite leave to remain in the UK. Students can switch from a student visa to this category. An outline of the sub categories under this tier are as follows:

  • Tier 1 - Investor
  • Tier 1 - Entrepreneur

Tier 2

This tier replaces the old Work Permit route. It is available to skilled workers who have a job offer from an employer. There are 5 categories within this tier. They are:

  • Work Permits (Bulgarian & Romanian Nationals)
  • Tier 2 - General
  • Tier 2 - Ministers of Religion
  • Tier 2 - Sports person
  • Tier 2 - Intra-company transfers

Tier 3

This route is aimed at low skilled workers filling temporary labour shortages in particular areas. Visas via Tier 3 are not yet available.

Tier 4

This tier is aimed at those wanting to study in the UK or students wanting to extend their time in the UK. Students can apply under one of the following categories:

  • Adult Student
  • Child Student ( for 4 to 17 year old children)

Tier 5

People wanting to work in the UK on a temporary basis are able to apply for a visa under this tier. The categories within this tier are as follows:

  • Temporary Worker - Creative and Sporting
  • Temporary Worker - Charity
  • Temporary Worker - Religious
  • Temporary Worker - Government authorised exchange
  • Temporary Worker - International Agreement
  • Youth Mobility Scheme - For young people from certain countries wishing to experience life in the UK. ( A replacement of the old Working Holiday visa route)
