University of Bedfordshire approached Bedfordshire County Council in 2008 to see if they could use their expertise to help in the development and training of council staff. It proved to be an opportune time for training as County Hall was in the early phase of running down their operation as part of the transfer of undertakings in the reorganisation of local government and the setting up of new councils in Bedfordshire.
A development programme for senior managers was to be piloted for those who would be directly involved in the transitional period at County Hall. The programme needed to give managers specific skills to help them manage their staff more efficiently during this potentially difficult transitional period.
Bedfordshire County Council’s in-house training was used as a foundation for tailored workshops which were provided by the University of Bedfordshire on-site for County Hall. The workshops covered a range of topics including planning & personal development, managing business challenges, managing operations, plus much more. Emphasis was placed on group and individual learning support, which led to a good support unit being created.
“I was delighted to have the opportunity to work with the CMI and the University of Bedfordshire to deliver this programme. The University’s advice led to a productive partnership, and the level of professionalism and enthusiasm from their team gave valuable support to our managers on the programme.”
Bedfordshire County Council’s HR Manager, Alison Lowe
