The South East Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership held its latest event at the University of Bedfordshire's new Campus Centre on 24th January.
Prof. Les Ebdon, Vice Chancellor of the University of Bedfordshire hosted the event and delivered the keynote address to the forum, which brings together businesses, universities and colleges, community groups, social enterprises and local government in Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire and Luton, Milton Keynes, Cherwell, Aylesbury and Dacorum. Together these partners are working closely with Government to support inward investment, innovation, economic growth, new enterprise and job creation.

The University of Bedfordshire’s brand new Campus Centre hosted a high-profile visitor three weeks ago when the BBC chose the venue to broadcast the Politics Show East from the facility.
Presenter Etholle George was joined by Kelvin Hopkins, MP for Luton North, and Foreign Office Minister Alistair Burt, who is also MP for North East Bedfordshire. The 20-minute show was broadcast live in front of a specially-invited audience, comprising local council, faith and business leaders as well as some of the University’s own media students and staff. Recent graduates Igor Drozdov and Maksim Popov, who both now work in the media department, liaised with the BBC production team on technical issues.
The Politics Show East Director Julie Hay said: “This was live and a bit more adventurous for us this time. The facilities and the people who’ve helped us are absolutely fantastic and it was really great to work with the students. The studio facilities are better than what we’ve got in Norwich or Cambridge. The lighting is superb and the cameras are all really easy to use.”
The University’s Business Development Manager Sarah Waller said: “We’re thrilled with how it went and the University is well able to cope with these major live transmissions. It’s important that the University keeps building these key relationships with major organisations such as the BBC. The crew were incredibly generous with their time and experience to our uni students. I was very proud of our students and their professionalism.”
The Knowledge Hub is calling all middle managers and staff of similar levels to attend the latest leadership and management workshops starting mid-March. By developing your professional and core management skills, even if just to reinforce your existing knowledge, the course will equip you with the tools needed to meet the ever-changing demands of business.”
The programme will cover all aspects of management and leadership within an organisation, from understanding and meeting stakeholders’ needs to personal development planning, supporting your team in achieving objectives and managing performance.
The course starts on Thursday 17th March and will be formed of five workshops, which will take place over a 10 week period at the Putteridge Bury Conference Centre. Course fees are £750 + VAT. A new sport and fitness-focused facility opened in Bedford recently. Aiming to bring together sport and health-related businesses to grow commercially in partnership with the University, the body hub is the University’s ‘Home of Sport and Health Enterprise’ and will also benefit health-conscious staff, students and members of the public.
Based at the Alexander Sports Centre in Bedford, the project is the first of its type for any UK university and is headed up by Sport Science and Personal Training Lecturer Kevin Wyld.
“Our main aim for the body hub,” commented Wyld, “is to encourage collaboration between businesses with a sport and fitness focus and the best way to do that is to offer them a place under the same roof as like-minded organisations. They can then draw upon the University’s expertise in areas such as sports science and rehabilitation, health and fitness assessment, musculoskeletal research and development, as well as taking advantage of our considerable consulting, coaching and training resources.
“In addition, we have a fantastic strength and conditioning facility onsite with Olympic-standard equipment which is already being used by the University’s sports teams,” continued Wyld. “The unit is open to staff, students and members of the public on a membership or cost-effective pay-as-you-go basis. It is already used by rugby players from Bedford Blues and we would encourage other local clubs, schools and individuals to come along and try out the facilities.”
