New Pro-Vice Chancellor appointed

Professor Carsten Maple has been newly appointed as the Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research and Enterprise at the University.

After first joining the University of Luton in 1998, Professor Maple was most recently Head of the Department of Computer Science and Technology. He will now be in charge of spearheading the drive for research and enterprise at the University and plans to work extensively with local, regional, national and international communities and businesses. The University already has a great reputation of working with local businesses and Professor Maple wants to build on what has already been achieved and capitalise on the new potential available. From cartoons to cardiovascular surgery

You could be forgiven for thinking that computer graphics and animations are only used in the latest shoot ‘em up video game or cartoons. But the truth is they are being used increasingly to provide significant advances in medical healthcare. Our Knowledge Network is holding an event to demonstrate how these advances can be of benefit to everyone.

‘Advances in Medical Healthcare Using Computer Visualisation’ will look into the developments in medical healthcare. The event will take place on 28th October at the Putteridge Bury Conference Centre in Luton and will provide an overview of the Virtual Physiological Human initiative in which the University’s Centre for Computer Graphics & Visualisation (CCGV) is heavily involved.

Professor Gordon Clapworthy, head of CCGV, will be the keynote speaker and will focus on specific tools that are being developed which cover many serious conditions such as brain cancer, lung cancer, heart failure and osteoporosis, and surgical procedures such as stent placement, which is used to treat vascular disease.

Medical visualisation provides the latest interactive imaging techniques that allow clear and fluid explanation of disease and will have a profound impact on patient recovery times. The future applications of this technology are far-reaching and will revolutionise the way we look at surgical interventions.

We are also pleased to announce that a support presentation will be provided by non-invasive chest assessment specialist, PneumaCare, outlining how developments in medical visualisation are being used within their organisation to provide better healthcare.

In addition to our two main speakers, Dr Elly Philpott will present a short summary of the findings of her recently completed research project on how SMEs can best access EU funding in eHealth.

The event starts at 6.00 pm with coffee and registration. Tickets costs £10 and include wine, a finger buffet and the opportunity to network. For further information, or to book your ticket, click here.

More cultural treats from the University of Bedfordshire's theatre

The University’s Theatre is opening for a second season in October and there are lots of great new performances to get excited about! From dance to comedy, and theatre to music, there really is something for everyone.

During October alone, some of the most exciting international dance artists will be performing at the theatre. Belgian choreographer Filip Van Huffel's company Retina will showcase their latest double bill of work, La Lutte and Antipode, which integrates live music with dance. State of Flux, a vibrant dance film company dedicated to the creation of fresh, exciting and original work will also be performing.

Last season’s sell-out comedy sketch friends, The Great Brainers, return with a new and exciting show, and newcomers Khayaal Theatre company will be considering what it means to be a young British Muslim today.

As if that wasn’t enough, the theatre is also introducing Family Theatre for children during the October half term, which will provide lots of fun for a younger audience with shows such as The Little Red Hen and Potted Pirates.

University provides free access to media production facilities

The University is offering to make short films for local organisations in the voluntary and public sectors – for free! University project Mediatrain provides a not-for-profit film production service and works with a variety of organisations to give them access to the University’s broadcast-quality production facilities.

Experienced production teams at the University work with final year undergraduates on work experience with Mediatrain to produce short educational, fundraising or training films. All films are professionally developed in the University’s media production facilities.

A recent organisation to use the service was LAMP - a Christian charity that supports young homeless people in Luton. They used their DVD produced by Mediatrain in their Homelessness Prevention work and secured £5,000 worth of funding as a direct result of showing the film to a community fundraising group.

In conjunction with Social Stampede, a local production company with a strong track record in broadcasting, Mediatrain also provides companies in other sectors with a low-cost professional film production service. The production teams consist of media graduates who work closely with professional directors to produce informative and educational films for clients.

For organisations in the media sector who are in need of an extra pair of hands, Mediatrain offers a subsidised internship scheme which places recent media graduates in companies for up to three months. This Government supported scheme enables companies, especially SMEs, to develop new projects and fill gaps in their workforce.

Fundraising Project for MSc Students

Our MSc Project Management students gained some great practical experience recently and raised a load of money for charity to boot. As part of their course, the students were divided into eight teams and each team was asked to carry out a project which would raise as much money as possible for their chosen charity.

Each team was led by one of our PRINCE2® qualified students who used their skills to manage the project. The day was a great success and over £1,400 was raised for some well-deserving charities including Great Ormond Street Hospital, Cancer Research UK, the Red Cross, Save the Children, Oxfam and Happy Days.

The MSc course provides students with the tools and technical skills necessary to manage a successful project, gain a Prince 2 qualification and understand important aspects of HR such as managing teams, and risk and quality management.

If you would like to improve your project management skills, check out our internationally recognised PRINCE2 qualifications. Click here for more details.
