Pushing local enterprises to success and beyond

The Social Enterprise East of England (SEEE) is encouraging all social enterprises to apply to the body for full funding for higher-level training as part of the ‘Beyond 2010’ initiative. Top tips for keeping your business fit and healthy in 2011

How robust and healthy is your business? Are you prepared for the changes in legislation that may impact on your business now and in the future? Now is the time to ask yourself whether your business is ready for 2011 or whether it could do with a little check-up. Here are some top tips for ensuring that your business is fit and healthy for the year ahead:

iXBRL
From April 2011, almost every set of accounts and corporate tax returns must include individual tags enabling HMRC systems to read them automatically, so you will need to ensure that both you and your staff understand how the tagging software works.

FRSME
Financial reporting in the UK is about to change for almost all companies, which will impact on how you produce your accounts and potentially how investors or lenders may view your financial performance.

Changes to Pension Regulations
From 2012 all employers will be required to enrol eligible staff into a pension scheme and contribute towards their retirement, significantly increasing staff costs, which will need to be planned for.

R&D Tax Relief
If you are “breaking new ground” in the field of science or technology you could benefit from this valuable relief. Give some thought to any research and design work that may qualify.

Covenants
Covenant breaches can have a significant impact on the appearance of your financial statements. Have regular, open conversations with your Relationship Manager and avoid giving your bank any nasty surprises.
