22 Mar 2010 12:17:58Six budding entrepreneurs are representing the University of Bedfordshire in prestigious national championships at the end of the month.

Employers from some of the UK’s most dynamic companies will judge teams in Apprentice-style meetings and Dragons’ Den-style pitches, looking to spot talent and not just to test existing knowledge.
The competition winners will receive £500 cash each and a chance to implement their business idea.
The six outstanding students from the University are Alexia Francesca Grech, Manjunath Basapoor, Greg Dorban, Alin Dobrea, Batjargal Sugarjav and Simona Stasiulyte.

Politicians should tell the truth on higher education funding
18 Mar 2010 09:23:50Politicians should come clean about university funding cuts - according to Professor Les Ebdon CBE.
The chair of the university think tank million+ and Vice Chancellor of the University of Bedfordshire believes all the political parties should state whether there will be further cuts in higher education funding after the General Election.
Professor Ebdon was commenting on grant allocations from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (Hefce) announced today (Thursday).
He said: “The funding council has clearly tried to ensure that the impact of reductions in the higher education budget are moderated in 2010-11.
“However, the cut in capital funding for teaching will cause long-term problems and the drive to concentrate research funding will undermine innovation in those universities which have historically received less money but have more than proved their worth in promoting world-leading research.
“For universities this is a phoney war because this funding settlement could be completely blown out of the water if there is a second budget after the General Election which makes further cuts to higher education.”

Entries full for Sport Relief Bedford Mile
17 Mar 2010 16:05:04Entries are now closed for the Sport Relief runs in Bedford on Sunday morning organised by the University of Bedfordshire.
The Sainsbury’s Sport Relief miles, organised by the University in conjunction with Bedford Borough Council’s Sports Development Unit, are starting from 10am in Bedford Park.
All the races – a total of 450 entrants – are now full as runners are competing over one, three or even six miles.
The University’s sports development officer Julia Lines is one of the organisers. She said: “The number of entrants is limited by the number of water bottles and goody bags supplied by Sport Relief.
“I’m sure we could have got many more, but we’re a victim of our own success as Sport Relief can’t cater for anyone else.
“There’s still the opportunity for anyone that has not signed up to come along on the day and cheer us on. Or you could even be one of the volunteers who are still needed to help the event run smoothly.”

This is an award-winning organisation in coral reef and tropical forest conservation, and it is currently helping to enable the creation of one of the world’s largest coral marine protected areas on the Chagos islands in the Indian Ocean.

Bedford to Scotland - and it's just a warm-up!
11 Mar 2010 15:41:39The University of Bedfordshire has already gone that extra mile for Sport Relief.
Around 30 runners, including staff and students and their family and friends, took part in a 24-hour 300-mile relay challenge to promote the Bedford Mile and attract runners and volunteers for the big day a week on Sunday (21 March).
Some even braved freezing overnight conditions as they went through the night from midday on Wednesday (3 March) to midday on Thursday (4 March) in Bedford Park.
There was at least one runner on the track through the park for the full 24 hours and they just managed to break the mammoth target by three miles to run a total of 303 miles – equivalent of running from Bedford to Scotland!
It was organised by the University’s sport and recreation department and Stephen Pitt, Julia Lines and Daniel Larkin manned the first aid tent for the full 24 hours and completed over 75 miles between them, running through the night and into the small hours of Thursday morning to cover a quarter of the total distance.

Experts to give tips on keeping computers safe
4 Mar 2010 10:33:59Ever worked out the value of the information you hold on your computer?
Leading experts Professor Carsten Maple and Geraint Williams from the University of Bedfordshire will talk at the next Knowledge Network event on 24 March about how users can protect their computer systems from hackers and viruses.
Computer systems open to the outside world are constantly at risk from intruders looking to exploit vulnerabilities. Not only could a system be infected or data compromised, but resources could be used to attack other systems. All large and small businesses and private users could be vulnerable to a security breach if they do not implement the correct technology.
Professor Maple and Geraint Williams are part of the ‘internationally excellent’ team that undertakes research in Computer Science at the University. They will reveal innovative tools to enable users to employ computer technology more efficiently and effectively to protect their systems today and discuss strategies to set up preventative measures to avoid attacks in the future.

Concentration of research funding will damage UK economy – says Uni Vice Chancellor
2 Mar 2010 17:24:56There is no economic or academic case for the concentration of funding for research or doctoral students. That’s the view of University of Bedfordshire Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon CBE.
Professor Ebdon was speaking today (Tues) as chair of the think-tank million+ at the launch at the House of Commons of its latest report A Postgraduate Strategy for Britain.
Concentrating research funding and doctoral students in just a handful of universities will damage both the UK university sector and the economy as a whole, according to the report.
The report comes at a time when Bedfordshire is launching a host of new postgraduate courses in a variety of subject areas.
It argues that proposals from research intensive universities to concentrate postgraduate provision should be set aside; this approach would have a negative effect on the economy, will damage innovation, will undermine expansion and accessibility, and will weaken the international competitiveness of the sector.

Opportunity to Aimhigher in Bedfordshire
19 Feb 2010 09:16:18A mentoring scheme involving the University of Bedfordshire is making dreams a reality.
The successful national Aimhigher Associates mentoring scheme involves linking young people of school age with university students from a similar background. They can then give them the benefit of their experience as the young people make decisions about their future education and careers.
Undergraduates are recruited to become associates, and use their personal experience to encourage and support pupils as young as 14 to make the most of their talents. It is planned that these interactions will develop over time, typically involving 15-20 sessions per associate per year.
Aimhigher Bedfordshire recruited 65 undergraduates for its own associates programme this year who are providing assistance to 700 school and college pupils in the area with options available to them for progression into higher education.
Many of the associates recruited from the University of Bedfordshire were placed in the schools and colleges they went to prior to university.
