The University of Luton was runner up at the Business/University Collaboration Awards for the East of England, which were recently hosted at Cranfield University, with a further three entries being short-listed for the final stages of the competition.
Supported by the East of England Development Agency (EEDA), the Awards were set up to recognise the value of partnerships and growth between businesses and universities, to help unlock potential for regional prosperity. Categories included the Most Innovative Collaboration and the Most Entrepreneurial Collaboration.
Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Manager Karen Wood, said: “We were delighted to hear that we go so far because we were up against some very tough competition.
“We have an excellent track record of developing partnerships with local companies and creating opportunities for young entrepreneurs, so we had no shortage of case studies to put forward. Staff worked extremely hard on their applications and video presentations, which covered various business backgrounds.”
Runners up were Professor Brian Mathews and Ludlows of Luton, who joined forces to look at cultural change within the company, and increase company competitiveness for future expansion and development.
Short-listed entries from the University of Luton included Professor Carston Maple, who worked with Beya Ltd on a product to help calculate the volume of milk obtained from a cow during the milking process. Professor Maple also assisted Computacall Ltd to investigate the lack of in-house technical support at many small and medium-sized companies.
Lecturer Penny Onley worked with Everglade Windows on a strategic repositioning strategy to help increase trade-based custom. This involved reviewing the firm’s marketing business support and quality assurance systems.
“Our staff members did extremely well to get so far and the volume of entries from the University of Luton is testament to our excellent links with local business,” said Karen.
The event was also supported by Anglian Water, The Association of Universities of the East of England and Hertfordshire Business Incubation Centre.
