University of Luton Scores a Hit in the Sports Science League Table

The University of Luton has shot into The Guardian’s charts at number 18 with Sports Science, one of its most popular degree subjects.

The Guardian’s league table, published today (19 April), rates Sports Science at Luton as among the best in the country.

University Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon said: “This is excellent news for Sports Science staff and students at Luton. We have invested heavily in this popular subject area, with new equipment and facilities, and it is good to see the subject given a high profile by one of the country’s national newspapers.”

The University of Luton appeared in 94th position overall (out of 122 institutions) – roughly the same position as in 2004 – although the newspaper itself states that “because of the way teaching quality was assessed for this year’s guide, no direct year-on-year comparisons are possible”. In fact, it goes on to say: “Start by ignoring the overall league table for all institutions, which is interesting, good for discussion over a pub table, but not that helpful to the aspiring student. Instead, select your subject.”

Professor Ebdon said: “I agree that, with so many newspaper leagues tables and constantly changing criteria, it must be very confusing for students and parents. But it is particularly regrettable that The Guardian no longer includes the Government’s official teaching quality measures. Surely teaching quality is the most important factor when choosing a university?

“Luton is rated top among the new universities for its teaching quality – something which both the former Secretary of State for Education and Skills, Charles Clarke, and The Guardian picked out for particular praise in 2004. Indeed, The Sunday Times placed up top among the new universities and 14th in the country overall for teaching quality in both 2003 and 2004,” he added.
