The University of Luton Student Union (ulsu) is using the latest craze to get students to vote in the forthcoming general election.

Members of the SU will be giving out claret wristbands as part of the NUS’ ‘Get the vote out’ campaign, to help highlight the importance of the student vote.

Students rallied together outside the University of Luton Student Union today (22 April) to unveil a giant version of the wristband, in a bid to encourage students to get out and vote on 5 May.

Ulsu President, Nathan Spencer, said: “Many people in the world are not fortunate enough to live in a democratic society. The days where the political movement was strong within the student body are long gone, but a vote is such a terrible thing to waste. Student fees, student debt and student life will all be affected by the outcome of this election. Whatever you do on 5 May, make sure you vote.”

The NUS estimates that there are five million students in the UK eligible for voting – that’s 13 per cent of the voting population - which could well sway the vote in marginal constituencies.

The Student Union has been using flyers and posters, as well as sending all-student emails and texts, via their marketing system, to encourage students to vote.
