More than 80 Sports Therapy students from the University of Luton joined forces with members of Sports Therapy UK, to help ease the aching muscles of this year’s London Marathon runners.

Two coach loads from the Division of Sport and Exercise Science left Park Square with towels, oils and portable couches, and headed for the capital city to put their sports massage skills to the test.

Organising the day was lecturer, Tim Paine. He said: “This was by far the largest turn out from the University that we’ve had in the last four years. It is essential for students to gain practical experience during their course and this is one of the best arenas to get high-volume hands-on experience.”

On arrival, the students were assigned to one of several charities which had set up their own reception centres to treat those running the gruelling 26-mile circuit.

Tim said: “Everyone was wearing their University of Luton t-shirts and sweaters so all the runners knew where we came from. It really was fantastic to see our students lined up in their University kit looking so professional.”

The students carried out sports massage on those running to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Relief, the Anthony Nolan Trust, Great Ormond Street Hospital and the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

“We massaged hundreds of very tired marathon runners and we didn’t finish until 5.30pm. The students were on a high afterwards and were thrilled that they got such excellent field experience,” Tim added.
