Beauty, brains and a desire to put her country on the international map – Miss Vietnam has a lot to offer and she is studying at the University of Luton.

The University of Luton boasts a mix of students from over 140 countries, so its not surprising that it has been attracting some high-profile people such as Pham Thi Mai Phuong – Miss Vietnam.

Mai, who comes from Hai Phong in the north of the country, was just 17 when she was crowned Miss Vietnam, live on national television.

Mai explained: “It is a big event in Vietnam - initially I was up against 1,000 other girls. My friends couldn’t believe it when they saw me in all the national papers and on TV, even though throughout the competition I was getting on with my life, cycling to school every day and living normally.”

Mai’s reign as Miss Vietnam meant that she got to travel to Thailand and carry out charity work around Vietnam for children born with deformities. She said: “I was so pleased that I got the chance to get involved with some charity work. I knew that my title would attract attention, so I worked with the parents of children born with deformities to help them get the medical treatment they needed.”

Mai didn’t allow the media attention to distract her from her studies and she continued going to school and working towards her final exams. It was during this time that she came across an advert for the University of Luton.

“I saw a poster about a visit by the University’s International team, so I decided to go along and hear what they had to say,” said Mai. “I really liked what I heard, and continued to work hard at school to get the grades that I needed to study a degree in Business Administration at Luton.”

Mai settled into her new life in Luton quickly and was really impressed with the quality of teaching. She said: “I received a great deal of help and support from my lecturers. They were so approachable and were never too busy to stop and listen and offer advice.”

When she graduates Mai plans to return to Vietnam. “I feel very passionate about my country and want to work for the government on regeneration and economic development projects. I want to put Vietnam on the international map and open up opportunities for other countries to do business with us,” she said.
