One of the University of Luton’s most enterprising business professors has been singled out by the Queen for a new 2005 award.
Professor of Enterprise, Alan Barrell, is to be given the Queen’s Award for Enterprise Promotion, one of the first 10 new awards made this year.
Professor Barrell said it was a great honour. “I am delighted and honoured to be a recipient of The Queen’s Award for Enterprise Promotion. This is the first time individuals have been recognised in this way – and there are only 10 each year. I am the only recipient in the East of England,” he said.
Professor Barrell will meet the Queen to receive his award at Buckingham Palace in July. But his first ‘official’ event has already taken place. He had to go to Whitehall on Friday 22 April to a meeting hosted by The Duke of Gloucester.
The Professor said: “The business team has worked together to start some great new enterprising initiatives. I have worked with many local enterprising companies in and around Luton, for example Microlaunch Systems and PCHelpline. I would hope that the University of Luton can benefit from this honour, to help us continue to raise our profile and promote a University of quality and diversity.”
Professor Barrell is also Entrepreneur in Residence at Cambridge University, and has been elected Visiting Professor at the University of Xiamen, in Fujian province, in China.
Xiamen is one of China’s best-known universities and was the first in the country to run a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) programme. It now has links with top universities around the world.
The professor has served as CEO of Domino Printing Sciences plc and Willett International; managing partner of Cambridge Gateway Fund; CEO of Baxter Healthcare UK and Europe; vice chairman of the Centre for Tomorrow’s Company; and he is treasurer and trustee of Papworth Trust and a member of the Cambridgeshire Development Committee of The Prince's Trust.
He also works with groups involved with technology clusters in Cambridge, Luton, York, Sophia Antipolis, Tel Aviv and elsewhere. His company, Cambridge Worldwide Associates, helps many young companies get started, raise finance and grow.
Professor Barrell’s teaching includes Entrepreneurial Finance, International Business Development and Organisational Theory and Practice. His books tackle the same subject areas.
He also chairs the awards at the Multicultural Conference on Competitiveness and Enterprise which will be held at the University of Luton for the second time in November this year. For further information, contact Alan Barrell at alan@alanbarell.com or on 01223 249597 or 0788 764 4597.
