A pioneering Centre that plans to lead the way in women’s enterprise on a national level has launched the UK’s first women-only Masters in Business Administration (MBA).

The University of Luton’s Centre for Women’s Enterprise (CWE) is offering the MBA programme for Developing Businesses to a women-only group, with the first year of study at a quarter of the usual fee, thanks to funding from the European Social Fund (ESF).

The offering of the MBA via supported learning directly addresses the findings of research published last year, which revealed that more women would undertake MBA study if there were more allowance for family responsibilities and a balanced life with their partners.

In addition, figures from the Association of MBAs show that the number of women undertaking MBA study has remained the same over the last decade, making up just 27 per cent of the current UK MBA student population.

Sue Bathmaker, Programme Manager of the MBA in Developing Businesses, said: “The University already has an excellent track record with its MBA provision, both nationally and internationally, and we have many women on our mixed gender programmes.

“Given the Government’s focus on women’s enterprise, and in recognition of the busy lifestyles of women today, this subsidised MBA will enable such women to further their business understanding and management capability or set up and develop their own businesses. It also provides an excellent opportunity for leadership development and personal growth.”

The MBA will focus on developing areas of knowledge that are fundamental to the understanding of strategic management, with an underpinning theme of leadership.

Areas of study include marketing strategy, entrepreneurship, managing people, strategic finance and e-business management. A self-developmental reflective diary and an in-depth project on the study of leadership take the place of an academic dissertation.

Dawn Jordan (photo), Head of the Centre for Women’s Enterprise, said: “We’re delighted to be offering the MBA as a flagship service of the new Centre. The Centre’s aim is to ensure that women get access to the skills, support, inspiration and contacts needed to succeed in their chosen careers. This directly feeds into the Government’s widening participation policy, which the University is striving to deliver.

“This MBA is the first of a number of services that will do just that, and we are also setting up business progress groups, professional development workshops and networking opportunities, as well as conducting research into women’s entrepreneurship.”

Applications for the October 2005 MBA programme are invited now from women in England who own or are employed by small to medium private sector enterprises (SMEs) of up to 250 people.

Candidates must have management experience or a degree from a recognised institution with two years management experience. Interested applicants should email their CV to mba-admin@luton.ac.uk or call 01582 743418 for further details.
