The grounds of St Mary’s Church in Luton were filled with colour last week as the latest graduations from the University of Luton took place.

More than 350 students from the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences gathered over two days to receive their degrees in a number of subjects including nursing, midwifery, psychology and education studies.

The ceremonies also celebrated the strong links between the University and its partner colleges, including Barnfield, which was represented by its Principal, Meryl Harris, who was Guest of Honour at one of the three ceremonies.

In his speech to special guests, graduands and their families, Vice Chancellor, Professor Les Ebdon, said: “The partnerships we have forged with local colleges have played a huge part in our growth and enabled us to develop important links with the National Health Service, three different Workforce Development Confederations and many NHS Trusts.”

He said that the Faculty has enjoyed a very successful year with its Institute of Health Research clinching a £250,000 grant from the Big Lottery fund. The grant will help carry out a four-year study with the National Kidney Research Fund to explore culturally competent diabetic care pathways for South Asian communities.

A further £190,000 was awarded by the NHS Co-ordinating Centre for the Research Capacity Development.

The Faculty was also praised following the Quality Assurance Agency’s Major Review of Health Care programmes.

Professor Ebdon added: “All these successes certainly add to today’s celebrations. It has been a hugely successful year for the Faculty and I hope that today is the beginning of a very exciting journey for the excellent graduates who now have the necessary knowledge and skills to succeed in their chosen careers.”
