Luton’s Mayor took a trip down memory lane last week when he visited the University of Luton’s Park Square campus where he studied in the early 90s.

Councillor Haji Abid was met by Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon, before enjoying a tour of the Learning Resources Centre, the Computing Department and the School of Media, Art and Design.

“I’m very impressed with the changes that have taken place since I studied here,” he said. “In particular, the Learning Resources Centre looks amazing and the facilities are excellent.”

Councillor Abid graduated with an HND in Public Policy in 1994 before getting involved in local politics. Earlier this year, he became Luton’s youngest Mayor.

He said that his university years were some of the happiest of his life. “I had a fantastic time at Luton. Some of my fondest memories are of this time. My lecturers were superb and I got the chance to study with students from all over the world.

“The University is a very important part of the town, both socially and economically and I’m delighted to see it go from strength to strength. This makes me very proud.”

The Mayor also got a glimpse of the building work that is currently under way at the University’s new Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL). The University was awarded £3.3m by the Government to develop the Centre – the only one of its kind in the region - which will be officially opened in early 2006.
