More than 50 job seekers from Luton are celebrating after completing the first semester of the University of Luton’s Passport to Academic Life (PAL) project. And University staff are now looking to sign up a further 30 delegates in early 2006.
The project, which is funded by the Higher Education European Social Fund (HE ESF), offers free part-time university study to mature job seekers.
Project Support Executive, Angela Mugomezi, has been working closely with Luton Job Centre to recruit delegates for the programme. She said: “We are delighted that so many people have chosen to come on this course and most importantly, stayed committed to achieving their goals.
“Rebecca Eggleton and her team at Luton Job Centre have done a fantastic job in identifying and supporting applicants for the scheme. We are delighted with the response. It really is changing people’s lives.”
One of those to benefit from the programme is 26-year-old PAL student, Zamzam Ibrahim, from New Town. She said: “The teaching quality is of a very high standard and there is a great deal of support available. My confidence has increased and my writing has significantly improved.”
Students study over two semesters and can choose from a wide range of subjects including Business, Psychology, Law and Computing. The aim of the project is to increase delegates’ skills, knowledge and overall employability and to prepare them for a return to work or education.
Another PAL student, 27-year-old Febe Shithigona, said: “I’m very happy to be a part of the PAL programme because I think it will really help my future job prospects.
“I now realise I have the potential to study for a degree. I’m very excited about the opportunities that will become available to me as a result of this training.”
Students who successfully complete their modules will receive a nationally recognised qualification and will then be offered a place on a degree programme at the University of Luton.
Applicants for the next PAL project are currently being received for February 2006. For further information and to register, visit www.unipal.org.uk.
