Partha Dey

A Luton businessman is passing on the secrets of his success to local people in a series of free workshops organised by the University of Luton and its community partners.

Partha Dey was once a man with a van – now he’s the director of PDT Express, a successful same day delivery service company.

He will be offering his expertise on growing a family or small business at the Bury Park Community Centre on 21 February 2006. The free, two-hour workshop is about the challenges and opportunities facing family businesses, and how to grow your own enterprise.

The University’s Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Manager, Karen Wood, has invited Partha to share the secrets of his success. “The latest workshops follow our hugely successful series which ran in Dallow and attracted a range of people from around Luton. Partha’s advice and tips will be a huge help to those who want to make their dreams a reality,” said Karen.

PDT Express is now a very successful same-day courier company in Luton with 150 local firms using its services, including big names such as easyJet and Britannia – couriering everything from envelopes to articulated lorry loads.

Partha said: “I am delighted to be able to speak at the workshop because, as a business, we should give something back to the community. This will help the community economically by encouraging new businesses, which is good for the whole town.

“I also have a lot of experience in overcoming problems – my first ever deal went sour and I had a nine year battle to recover the money. I’ve experienced vandalism to my vehicles and some have even been stolen - but I’ve overcome all of these to succeed.

“I hope my determination will encourage others. Like me, they can start a business working from home and develop it until it is big enough to move into their own premises."

Partha’s session is one of a series of free workshops called ‘Enterprise in the Community’, delivered through the University of Luton in partnership with the Dallow Learning Community Centre, the Bury Park Community Development Trust and supported by The Chamber.

The workshops have been developed from the success of the Basics of Building a Business (B3) lecture series, which is run by the University’s knowledge hub. B3 was developed to encourage greater enterprise development in Luton.

The two-hour workshops during January, February and March will be presented by local business people like Partha and offer opportunities for people to look at self-employment or to set up their own business.

They include inventor and mother-of-four, Janet Theodore, who has her own company Tip Top Kids; Kristina Julin Springer, who set up a workshops company a year ago; Lynette Warren, bringing social and community expertise from the University of Luton’s Innovation Centre; Jagdit Lotay, who set up the Icknield Childcare Consortium; Lee Allen, director of AW Transport, who has been a key figure in making improvements to deprived areas of Luton; solicitor Neelam Patel, a member of Taylor Walton’s commercial team; and Jason Meenie, an accountant with Godfrey Laws, who advises all sizes of business on their affairs.

The free workshops at Bury Park Community Centre include:

  • January 24: Think enterprising thoughts (pre-bookable crèche available) - a look at how experiences and practical ideas can lead to new opportunities.
  • February 7: Social enterprises - how to combine business opportunities with community or wider social benefits.
  • February 21: Growing the family and micro business – the challenges and opportunities facing family business, and how to grow your own enterprise.
  • March 7: Understanding the basic financial and legal issues of a new business – the requirements for starting out on your own and how to access practical help.

Karen added: “We want to encourage those who have ever contemplated starting out in business to join us. Some of the attendees from our previous sessions have now transferred to other programmes to learn about the next stage of setting up a business. We will support them all the way, thanks to our strong links with local businesses.”
