University of Luton wins a Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning award.

Luton students will benefit from a massive £3.3m funding boost, it was announced today (Thursday 27 January).

The University of Luton has been selected as a Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) by the Government in recognition of its outstanding work in helping and supporting student learning and in providing significant ‘added-value’ to the students it recruits from diverse backgrounds.

Dr Mark Atlay, the University’s Head of Teaching Quality Enhancement, said: “This is fantastic news. The award recognises the hard work and dedication of staff in supporting student learning and the achievements of the University and its students.

“The next few years will see a dramatic evolution for the University of Luton, not least in the development of its innovative curriculum but also in the form of an £800,000-plus capital project to house the new Centre.”

The University won its CETL through a competitive process against other universities with only a limited number (around 70) being awarded nationally.

According to the Government’s report, “CETLs recognise, celebrate and promote excellence by rewarding teachers who have a demonstrable impact on student learning and who enthuse, motivate and influence others to do the same”.

Mark said: “Luton’s £3.3m will be used over the next five years to help and support students in their undergraduate education and to ease the transition into higher education and from higher education into employment. It will mean students will have better access to resources and staff.

“This is further confirmation of the University’s excellent record in teaching and we will be working with our students to explore ways in which their learning can be further enhanced.”

As a recognised Centre for Excellence, the University will be at the forefront of national and international developments in supporting the learning of students from diverse backgrounds.
