Recording an album is something that thousands of people dream of – recent TV programmes have shown this – but for one University of Luton graduate, that dream has become a reality…twice!
Carl Anthony, or JBlak as he is known on the music scene, graduated from the University last year, with a BSc (Hons) Computer Science degree.
Fellow student and friend, Poku Kessie, is a final year Sports Science student and founder of “Affillia Records” and “Streetz Productions”.
“I started Streetz in 2001 and had five DJs, three MCs, two promoters and a secretary working for the company, all of whom were University of Luton students,” explained Poku.
“In May 2002, I then signed up JBlak. By the summer of 2003, I decided to expand a little more,” Poku said. “Along with JBlak and one other University student, I started to build a bigger team and Affillia Records was created.”
It is through Affillia Records that JBlak has produced and recorded "Nothing Long", a collection of popular hip-hop and UK garage tracks, remixed by the artist.
JBlak, who is from Walthamstow, explained: “We previously released "Kings of the Underground" in May 2004 and sold 350 copies which, for an independent label and first album, was a great feeling.
“This latest album was released on 1st January after 15 months of hard work. This is my first solo release under our label and is a chance for people to become familiar with my style and work. I'm excited to see what kind of reception I get.”
Affillia has featured at the Luton Carnival for the past two years. JBlak also appeared as an artist at the hat Factory launch in April last year, and his reputation on the music scene is growing rapidly.
“Big established labels are inundated with new talent every day so we decided to show this talent off and give new artists a chance,” Poku explained.
“We’re hoping to have an official launch of Affillia in the coming months, and we’ll invite representatives from some of the large record companies so they can see exactly what is out there for the picking!”
The CD is available directly from Affillia Records at www.affillia.com, CD Plus in the Market Hall, Luton Arndale Centre or Big Shot Records in Harpur Street, Bedford.
