In July, London will hear whether it will be chosen to host the 2012 Olympic Games. But the University of Luton has already been playing an active part – in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
More than 100 media and public relations professionals from across China have been studying at the University of Luton, learning how to handle the attention of the world’s press throughout the Beijing Olympics.
And, in a special graduation ceremony in Beijing last week, Luton’s Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon handed out certificates for the Masters degree in Media Management to the third cohort of delighted graduates.

Professor Ebdon told the audience of graduands, friends and families: “There are few international enterprises that have enjoyed the success and reputation of the Olympic Games. I have been most impressed by the preparations made by the Beijing Municipal Government, by the people of this great city and indeed the whole of this remarkable nation in preparing for the 2008 Olympic Games.
“At the University of Luton we have been proud to be able to share in a small way in your preparations through the training offered to your media professionals through our MA Media Management. My colleagues have been genuinely impressed by the quality of the students and their obvious enthusiasm for, and dedication to, their work.

“All of this suggests that the 2008 Olympic Games will not only be the most successful ever but a wonderful showcase for the world to see the achievements of the Chinese people,” he said.
The Masters degree in Media Management was designed by media experts at the University of Luton exclusively for Beijing professionals in a unique collaboration agreement with the Beijing Municipal Government, the International College Beijing and China Agricultural University.
Professor Ebdon added: “We remain committed to working with our partners continuously to improve these courses to meet students’ needs. Indeed, we are very much hoping that the bid made by London to host the 2012 Olympic Games will be successful and therefore the experience that we have gained working with colleagues in China will help us to contribute to the success of the London Games.”
