Ethnic minority representation across the University of Luton’s academic community is twice the sector average, the latest statistics reveal.

The figures, published this week by the University’s Human Resources Department, show that the percentage of academic staff from ethnic minority backgrounds stands at 19 per cent at Luton, while the sector average is 10.5 per cent, according to Government statistics.

And women make up 40 per cent of academic staff at Luton – again, higher than the sector average at 35 per cent.

University Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon said: “I was pleased to see the evidence which proves that the University of Luton is leading the field in workforce diversity. We are proud of our record in attracting academic staff from different genders, cultures, backgrounds and experiences. This gives our students a wonderfully varied educational experience.”

He pointed out that the University of Luton also has one of the most diverse students populations, with more than one-third of the student community coming from ethnic minority backgrounds, and a more than a quarter of the student population from outside the UK and EU.

Professor Ebdon added: “While we are proud of our record and achievement to date, we have set ourselves a tough target to increase the diversity of our workforce. This year, we aimed for a two per cent increase in the recruitment of staff from ethnic minority groups – and achieved it. But we will continue our efforts to lead the field in equality and diversity issues. This is part of what it means to be an opportunity University.”

The University of Luton will be is hosting the second Multicultural Conference on Competitiveness and Enterprise on 23 November 2005. The University’s Centre for Competitiveness is organising the conference, which boasts high-profile speakers from all over the world. An awards ceremony in the evening will celebrate the successes of individual entrepreneurs, including leading international companies, organisations and former Luton students.
