OLYMPIC experts at the University of Luton today welcomed the news that London is to host the 2012 Olympic Games – and immediately offered their assistance.

The University has a wealth of Olympic-related knowledge. Some 35 journalists and public relations specialists form the latest cohort of students from Beijing studying a unique masters’ degrees in Media Management at the University in preparation for the 2008 Games. Other areas of expertise include: history of the Games; the politics of sport; famous sports stars; and sports injuries, therapy and massage.

University Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon said: “We expect that we will be able to offer vital assistance to those involved in organising and attending the 2012 Olympics in London, not least having so far trained more than 100 Beijing journalists and PR professionals to prepare them for the attention of the world’s media.”

Professor Ebdon himself recently visited Beijing and said: “There are few international enterprises that have enjoyed the success and reputation of the Olympic Games. I was most impressed by the preparations made by the Beijing Municipal Government, by the people of that great city and indeed the whole of that remarkable nation in preparing for the 2008 Olympic Games.

“At the University of Luton we have been proud to be able to share in a small way in those preparations by the training offered to media professionals through our MA Media Management. Indeed, we are very much hoping that the experience we have gained working with colleagues in China will help us to contribute to the success of the London Games.”
