A University of Luton law student was among only four students in the country chosen to meet the Secretary of State for Education and Skills, Ruth Kelly, at a recent House of Commons reception.
Wayne McBean, a 34-year-old student in the second year of an LLB (Hons) degree course, was invited by new universities’ lobby group, the Campaign for Mainstream Universities (CMU), to represent mature students from across the country in a presentation to Mrs Kelly.
Wayne said: “Students no longer arrive at university aged 18 and fresh from A levels. In fact, something like 60 per cent of students in the UK are classed as mature or are studying part-time while they continue their day jobs. The Government needs to be made more aware of the reality and support this increasing majority.
“I was very pleased to have been chosen to represent students and get these points across at such a high-profile event.”
Luton’s Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon is a member of the CMU Executive and also attended the reception. He said: “Wayne spoke eloquently of the way that the University of Luton had changed his life. It was obvious that the Secretary of State was impressed. Several MPs indicated he should have a great career as an advocate!”
CMU Chief Executive Pam Tatlow added: “The students and graduates chosen were representative of the diversity of the student profile in CMU institutions which frequently offer flexible opportunities to study accessed by older students, including postgraduates.”
Invited guests included MPs, members of the House of Lords, Chancellors, Vice Chancellors and representatives from industry, the Trades Union Congress and other stakeholders. The event was hosted by local MP, Kelvin Hopkins, who told the reception of the significant contribution the University makes to life in Luton and the surrounding area.
