The successful launch of Foundation degrees and the strong relationship between the University of Luton and its partner colleges, were recently celebrated at a special reception in the University’s Conference Centre at Putteridge Bury.

Bright sunshine set the scene for the event, where representatives from Barnfield, Dunstable, Bedford and Milton Keynes colleges gathered together to hear the Vice Chancellor, Professor Les Ebdon, thank staff for their role in the development of Foundation degrees, which have become an important part of the government’s policy on widening participation.

In his speech, Professor Ebdon said: “This event is a way of thanking our partner colleges for their hard work and effort in setting up and achieving an impressive range of Foundation degrees.

“Foundation degrees offer a fantastic opportunity to young people. My life was transformed by higher education and I firmly believe that, together, the University of Luton and its partner colleges play a vital role in transforming other people's lives."

The new Foundation degrees can be topped-up to undergraduate degree level, allowing students to study locally at college, and if they wish, move on to the University of Luton and potentially get an honours degree in one year.

The University has been working closely with the four colleges to develop a portfolio of Foundation degrees which include advertising and marketing, football studies, graphic design, media production, travel and tourism, and creative and editorial photography.

Also attending the event was Dean of Partnerships, Professor David Barrett, who works closely with liaison officers from the colleges.

He said: “The Foundation degree programme offers a new route into Higher Education for many students, particularly those who are currently under represented.

“The implementation of this impressive programme is down to the hard work and commitment of the staff at all our partner colleges.

“The University will continue to maximise the progression of students from further education into higher education and aims to increase Foundation degree provision from 300 students in 2004/05 to 860 in 2007/08.”
