Luton students benefit from the most up-to-date thinking and research, according to education expert Professor Les Ebdon.

The comment comes as staff at the University of Luton appeared in the number three position among all universities for their track record in combining both teaching and research.

According to the latest statistics from the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) and reported in national newspapers (Times Higher Education Supplement), Luton has the third highest percentage of academics who combine teaching and research, behind only the Universities of Central England and Plymouth.

Professor Ebdon said: “We believe strongly in synergy between research and teaching. High-quality research underpins excellent teaching and, at Luton, they work in harmony to the benefit of our students.”

Professor Ebdon pointed out that Luton has already appeared top among and new universities and 14th in the country overall for teaching quality, according to The Sunday Times in both 2003 and 2004 and based on Government statistics. The University also received six ‘excellent’ scores in a row for teaching from the Government watchdog the Quality Assurance Agency.

In the most recent research assessment by the Government, Tourism at Luton was awarded one of the highest scores in the country. Other areas of particular strength included Business, Social Work and Media. The Guardian also put Luton top of the table for “research power” ie for providing best value for money for research.

Professor Ebdon added: “I am proud that staff here at the University are so committed to conducting research and then applying it in their teaching. Students benefit by getting the very latest knowledge and up-to-date information.”
