Female staff and students at the University of Luton are being urged to leave their cars at home and get on their bikes this month, as part of an initiative to get more women into cycling.
The Women on Wheels programme is being run by Luton Borough Council, as part of a national campaign to raise the status of cycling, and encourage women to enjoy it not only as a leisure activity, but also as a means of transport.
“Women in the UK make up only 25 per cent of the cycling population, so we want to get women out on their bikes,” said cycling instructor Sarah Leeming (in yellow safety vest in photo) from the University of Luton.
“There couldn’t be a better time to cycle around Luton with the opening of the new cycle route, which takes in Wardown Park and several off-road trails around the town. We hope that female students and staff of all ages and abilities will come along and either experience cycling for the fist time, or be reminded how enjoyable it can be.”
The free evening and lunch time sessions run from 6 – 10 June, with beginners and advanced levels on offer. Bikes are available for those who don’t have one, but are limited, so advanced booking is advisable.
The campaign coincides with the opening of the latest stretch of Luton’s cycling network along Kestrel Way on Wednesday (1 June at 3pm), by Luton’s new Mayor, Councillor Haji Abid.
