Luton is a much better place because of the number of devoted student volunteers giving up their time to help community groups and organisations.

That’s according to the University of Luton Vice Chancellor, Professor Les Ebdon, who presented awards to several student volunteers at a special ceremony to mark National Volunteers’ Week.

Megan Palmer from the University’s Student Community Exchange project, said: “This is a very special year for the volunteer movement because 2005 has been designated the Year of the Volunteer. Student Volunteer England has set up this award scheme so that organisations, such as the University of Luton, can thank those who have given up their time to help make a difference to their local community.

“There is no shortage of committed and devoted student volunteers at this University. Every year I have seen the numbers increase and the same people are coming back time and time again to work on new projects. I’m delighted that they are being recognised for their dedication during National Volunteers' Week.”

The awards were divided in to three areas – dedication, achievement and leadership – with one student winning in each category.

Twenty-three-year-old international student Kavelle Savary, who is studying for a degree in child and adolescent studies, received the Dedication Award for her reliability, commitment and passion whilst volunteering at the Luton Carnival Arts Development Trust. Kavelle, who originally comes from Trinidad, also mentors a young student at the Sacred Heart School in Luton.

The Leadership Award went to 23-year-old graphic design student, Alexander Rehm, for leading others, sharing his skills and keeping people motivated and focused on their goals.

Alex, who hails from Germany, has volunteered with the Painting Smiles project, the Carnival Arts Development Trust, and has held training sessions at the University to teach other students who wanted to learn more about graphic design.

Twenty-one-year-old health and social studies student, Ryan Chung from Houghton Regis, was presented with the Achievement Award, for achieving a great deal on a personal level during his time as a volunteer. He overcame personal barriers to become a “dream volunteer” and a valued member of the student exchange programme.

Ryan gave up his time to work on the UR SHOUT project with the Safer Luton Partnership, where he helped young people at risk of anti social behaviour and offending.

Speaking at the event, Professor Les Ebdon said: “These students have made a huge difference to the organisations they have volunteered with. Their efforts are based on a passion to make a real difference in the local community – not for personal gain.

“This can be seen in the number of projects they have been involved with and the amount of time they have given to help others improve their lives.

“They are excellent ambassadors for the University of Luton and our town is a better place because of their efforts.
