Plans for new training and professional development opportunities for health professionals will be unveiled at the official launch of the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Postgraduate Medical School on 14 June.
The School, which was established by the universities of Hertfordshire, Luton and Cranfield in May 2004 in partnership with the NHS in Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire, is part of the £1 billion Investing in your Health plan set to revolutionise healthcare in these counties and result in a brand new state-of-the-art hospital in Hatfield.
It will provide a facility which will enable interprofessional working, which means health professionals will now be able to train and conduct research together.
The Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Sir Liam Donaldson is guest of honour at the launch event which will be held at The Weston Auditorium, University of Hertfordshire De Havilland Campus, Hatfield.
A presentation by Professor Duncan Empey, Dean of the Postgraduate Medical School will reveal how the School will address the training needs of health professionals in the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire regions and provide a ‘one-stop shop’ for their professional development and a platform for their research.
Professor Empey, who is based at the University of Hertfordshire and works closely with the University of Luton and Cranfield University Postgraduate Medical School will also demonstrate how the new School is making an inter-professional NHS a reality and is about to offer some of the first courses in the UK to address the changing roles of health practitioners.
Ian White, Chairman, Beds & Herts Strategic Health Authority commented:
“The creation of a new Postgraduate Medical School is a huge boost for Investing in Your Health, which will help us to deliver world-class health services for local people by encouraging the brightest and best health professionals to come to study and work in Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire.”
