Staff and Students Encouraged to Enter 2005 Innovation Awards

The University of Luton is searching for its most innovative entrepreneurs and used a special workshop to launch the 2005 Innovation Awards.

The knowledge hub’s Start Up and Spin Out workshops are designed to offer free advice and support to staff and students at the University, who are interested in launching an enterprise.

The 2005 Awards were launched by Vice Chancellor, Professor Les Ebdon. He said: “We have several projects in place that are helping business start ups around the region, but it is vital that we also encourage innovation within the University, among our own staff and students.

“We must invest in our entrepreneurs of the future because they will play a key role in the regeneration and economic development of Luton. This is already being recognised by the investment in projects such as the £16m Innovation Centre at Butterfield Technology Park.”

The Innovation Award offers cash to help start up a business and will be given to the individual or group with the most innovative and commercially viable product or concept. The competition is open to all full-time and part time staff, students and contract researchers at the University of Luton.

Individuals or teams of up to five can enter, and business ideas can be from any sector, though they must be original and have commercial potential.

Last year, e-Business and Management student, Duncan McKay from Leicestershire, won the £1,000 prize for his new media retail system for CDs, DVDs and PC software. He was commended by judges for his hard work in researching his product and for the potential of the technology he developed.

Karen Wood, Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Manager for the University, said: “We are extremely excited about this year’s awards because we know winning this competition can really change the course of peoples lives.

“Our workshops continue to help and inspire delegates who feel they can take their ideas forward because they are getting first rate advice from business experts, and it’s all free. We are looking forward to receiving a wider range of entries this year, and we know that like last year, the standard will be high.”

The closing date for the 2005 Innovation Award is October 28 and winners will be announced in November.
