Students from Barking College got a taste of university life during a recent visit to the University of Luton, and were surprised at the many aspects of higher education.
More than 65 students travelled to Luton to meet with staff and students for a special Taster Day, and to find out more about life inside the UK’s top new university for teaching (according to the Sunday Times in 2003 and 2004).
“This was a great opportunity for students to look at the different aspects of students life, from the facilities they will be using, to how assignments are graded, said Lal Joshi, Marketing Manager at the University of Luton.
“We know that for many students, going to university can be a very daunting experience and these Taster Days are a really good way to answer their questions, and show them what life is like on a day-to-day basis.”

The students took part in team building activities and were given a tour of the main campus at Park Square, which is home to the University’s new £5.5m School of Media Arts. They were also shown how assignments are graded and how lectures and seminars are operated.
Curriculum Team Leader from Barking College, Jan French, said: “It was a really excellent day and students learned a great deal about university life. Some of our students were very surprised about how large the lecture theatres were and how many students are in each lecture. They are used to learning in groups of 15-20.
“They also seemed to be surprised by the responsibility that students have to take on, not just in terms of managing their own finances and paying bills, but being responsible for their own learning and motivation, especially when they have to meet tight deadlines for assignments.”
The Taster Day also featured a session on choosing the right course and how UCAS applications are processed. Students then got the opportunity to ask questions and give feedback on their day.
