Luton Reports Above National Average for 2005 Applicants

The University of Luton has reported a ten per cent increase in the number of applicants applying to study for courses starting in September 2005 – that’s above the eight per cent national increase reported by the Universities Colleges Admission Service (UCAS).

Admission staff have noticed a particular increase in applications for Accounting, Advertising and Marketing, Business Studies and Psychology.

Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon said: “These figures are great news for the University and the town, when you consider that the University contributes more than £135m to the local economy.

“The rise in applicants can be directly attributed to our excellent teaching standards and to the fact that more students are looking for vocational courses that will help them succeed in today’s competitive jobs market.

“We have just carried out an extensive web poll which attracted more than 1,000 responses. The poll showed that the most important factor for students was the course they will be studying. This is clear evidence that students want courses that address their needs, both academically and vocationally.”

The admissions service at the University has also issued the top five most popular courses for 2005. Media Production is still top with Law, Midwifery, Sports Therapy and Social Work following closely behind.
