Volunteers painting wall

Student volunteers from the University of Luton are on a mission to make their town a brighter place.

Last Friday (13 May) they visited Dallow Learning Community Centre to paint a host of colourful scenes on the magnolia walls of the children’s playroom, including a beach scene, an ocean scene and the cartoon character Winnie the Pooh.

'Painting Smiles' is a student community exchange project that helps transform spaces in the local community – normally areas used by children.

Project manager Megan Palmer led the painting session. She said: “ This is the second year that we have come together to paint rooms and outdoor areas for local organisations. We want to brighten up the facilities so that those using them can enjoy them to the full.

“Last year we transformed the playground at Chapel Street Nursery and this made such a difference. We hope that the children using the Dallow Community Centre will enjoy their newly-decorated playroom. We are looking ahead to our next project, so any organisation that needs help should get in touch.”

The project was supported by the Business Resource Project, Voluntary Action Luton, and the Dulux trade centre in Luton which donated the paint. The team also received free pizzas from Pizza Hut to help them get through the afternoon!
