University Choir and Orchestra Join Forces for Summer Proms

Music lovers won’t have to travel to the Royal Albert Hall for an evening of proms this summer – the University of Luton’s own orchestra and choir can provide them locally.

Symphonia Academica, Bedfordshire’s professional orchestra resident at the University of Luton, will join forces with the University choir for the second Leagrave Proms at St Luke’s Church in Leagrave, on Saturday 4 June at 7.30pm.

The choir will be led by musical director, Julie Beaman, with David Beaman conducting and Peter Bussereau leading the orchestra.

The programme includes: Mozart’s Solemn Vespers for Solo voices, Choir, Organ and Orchestra; Purcell’s Overture and Rondo from Abdelazer; Holst’s St Paul's Suite; Dvorak’s Nocturne; Mozart’s Adagio & Fugue; Handel’s Zadok the Priest; and Bartok’s Romanian Dances.

This year, Symphonia Academica is celebrating 10 years of successful concerts in Bedfordshire. Formed in 1995, the orchestra became resident at the University of Luton in 1999 and gives several concerts a year in Bedfordshire, as well as performances throughout the south of England.

The orchestra has performed several world premieres in the past 10 years, including the Violin Concerto by their composer in association, Richard Sisson. They have also performed alongside local schools and groups.

“Education has always been important to the orchestra,” said Peter Bussereau. “We have worked with the Luton Music Service and more recently, with dancers from Luton Sixth Form College. Now we are really looking forward to performing with the University choir.”

Tickets cost £8 and £6 with concessions. Advance bookings can be made by telephoning 01582 516572 or 01582 502804, or can be bought on the door.
