The University of Luton’s Vice Chancellor has called on more Luton school children to study science subjects.
Professor Les Ebdon was at Luton Sixth Form College presenting awards at the Science MasterClass on behalf of the Science Group of the Luton Curriculum Network.
He told the audience it has never been more important to study science as we learn more about the challenges of global warming and climate change.
This year, against the trend, Luton Sixth Form College has enrolled record numbers on to science courses, which delighted the Professor, whose specialist field is chemistry.
During the presentation he encouraged the students by saying: “We must do all we can to protect our planet. Science can help us to understand the changes that are currently taking place.
“The genome revolution and the fact that we are learning how to target specific diseases makes it a very exciting time to enter the field of biomedical science.”
The Luton Science Masterclass is for Year 11 pupils from all the Luton high schools and aims to provide able and motivated pupils with stimulating activities to foster their interest in science. It also hopes to highlight teamwork and to encourage pupils to consider pursuing science subjects after GCSE.
It was the ninth Masterclass organised by Luton Curriculum Network. The Network exists to promote co-operation between Luton’s high schools and Luton Sixth Form College in curriculum areas.
The presentation included a lecture by Graeme Hogarth, from the Department of Chemistry at University College London (UCL), who demonstrated The Elements, an exciting display of the behaviour of some of the most important basic chemical building blocks.
