A new approach to training social workers and developing their careers after qualification has been launched as a joint initiative between the University of Luton and Luton Borough Council.

The Centre for Development of Social Care Practice (CDSCP), the first of its kind in the region, will give students the opportunity to focus on designated projects and to gain experience of working directly with people who use services.

Recently trained social workers, experienced social work practitioners and social care staff will also be able to use the Centre to work on development opportunities, allowing them to specialise in specific areas of social work.

Speaking at the event, Chair of the Commission for Social Care Inspection, Dame Denise Platt, said: “This is an extremely important time for social care. There have been many changes recently in terms of structures, processes and people.

“We need motivated, well-trained and highly-skilled people to deliver quality social care. This Centre will ensure on-going professional development which is vital.”

The new partnership was formed to maximise the opportunities available to students and social workers to learn in practice and improve the way social services, the Council and the University work together. The Centre will work with experienced practitioners who will have input into the course structure and help shape the curriculum.

Centre Manager Marisa Forbes said: “This Centre will help produce better qualified social workers and enhance the skills of those already qualified. It will also improve the diversity of practice learning experience for everyone.

“Those who attended the event, including the Regional Skills for Care Group, were very impressed and will be watching our development with great interest.”

During the launch, several students from the University’s Department of Applied Social Studies were presented with awards of commendation. The categories included overall performance during the year, dedication to academic study, applying theory to health and social care practice, and demonstrating perseverance and dedication to academic development.

Acting Head of Department, Amanda Thorpe, said: “We are always pleased to recognise students’ achievements and believe that personal growth and development should be accorded similar recognition as academic success. The launch was the perfect setting to present the awards as these students will benefit directly from this innovative Centre.”

The Directors of Luton Borough Council’s Children and Learning Department and Housing and Community Living also made presentations to staff who had demonstrated excellence in social are practice.

Corporate Director of Housing and Community Living, Jo Cleary, said: “Our staff do tough jobs and their efforts are often unrecognised. This is our way of saying thank you to those who have gone that extra mile to give our customers the best possible care.”
