Companies in Luton and Bedfordshire can save thousands of pounds every year by reducing their waste and increasing the amount they recycle.
That’s the message from the University of Luton, Bedfordshire and Luton Sustainable Business Partnership (BLSBP) and Bedfordshire Green Business Network, who will be holding a seminar on sustainable development to encourage more companies to go green and save energy.
The seminar, funded by the European Social Fund, will outline ways to help small to medium enterprises (SMEs) to comply with new waste management legislation and to create new opportunities for long-term growth through sustainable development.
Paul Corazzo, Project and Recruitment Manager at the University, believes companies aren’t aware of the huge savings they could make. He said: “Our research has shown that companies can save up to £1,000 per employee every year. The seminar will highlight the best ways to do this. It could be a very profitable morning for those who attend.”
The event will also highlight new government legislation relating to recycling and emissions.
“Smaller businesses generate 60 per cent of commercial waste and are responsible for almost 80 per cent of pollution incidents, yet only 18 per cent of small businesses are aware of any environmental legislation,” explained Paul. “Many companies are unaware that they risk fines or even prosecution if they don’t comply with the new legislation.”
Sarah Williams, Chief Executive of Bedfordshire Green Business Network, and guest speaker, added: “No one wants to see businesses crippled by prosecutions, but ignorance is no excuse when there is help available to get it right.
"This event aims to give businesses the chance to find out how environmental issues may affect them.”
The free seminar will be held at the University of Luton’s Putteridge Bury Campus on the 16 November from 9.30am-12.30pm.

Notes
The Environment Agency will attend the seminar to explain how they can help companies with waste management issues.
The Bedfordshire Green Business Network is a group of local companies and public sector agencies working together to provide member companies with information about environmental issues and new legislation, to help minimise the associated pressures and threats to such firms.
