Students from Enfield College got the chance to learn more about life in higher education during a recent visit to the University of Luton.
Thirty students planning to study tourism and sport made the trip to attend a special Taster Day to find out more about living and studying in Luton.
Lalit Joshi, Head of Student Recruitment at the University of Luton, said: “Our Taster Days give students the opportunity to find out exactly what to expect when they come to university.
“Leaving home to start a degree can be a daunting experience so we give them the opportunity to chat to current students and lecturers to discuss everything from the subjects available, to social events at the Student Union.”
The students took part in team building exercises and were given a tour of the main campus and sports facilities, which include a state-of-the-art gym, football and rugby pitches, and several indoor and outdoor tennis courts.
They were also shown how assignments are graded and advised about what lecturers look for when marking degree-level assignments.
Nisha Toofaneeram, a tourism student from Enfield said: “I wasn’t quite sure how much life at college differed from that at a university. This visit has given me a better idea of what to expect.
"Speaking to current students was really useful. They know exactly how we are feeling and about the concerns we have.”
Students were also given advice on how to manage their finances and how to deal with academic workloads and deadlines.
Georgia Sotris, a lecturer at Enfield College added: “It has been an excellent day.
“Seeing everything first-hand has allowed our students to go back to Enfield with a clearer understanding about what to expect when they come to university, and they know there is plenty of support available if they need it.
“Some students came away feeling much more confident and have since decided that university is for them.”
The Taster Day also featured a session on choosing the right course and what universities look for in students’ UCAS forms and personal statements.
