School children from around Luton came together at the University of Luton’s Putteridge Bury campus to take part in the annual Big Draw – an initiative designed to encourage students to express themselves through art.
The Drawing for Nature day was organised by Aimhigher Bedfordshire, who welcomed 40 young artists to the grounds of the Edwardian house to sketch autumn scenes.
Kiera Bennett, a London-based artist who led the session, explained: “This is a great opportunity for students to unleash their creativity away from a classroom environment. Putteridge Bury is a beautiful setting and the children really enjoyed the chance to draw outdoors.”
Students drew pictures in charcoal before working together to create collages.
“The feedback from the participants was excellent,” said Maria Kukhareva, Aimhigher Development Officer. “We had a brilliant turnout – all the places were snapped up. It was great to see everyone enjoying the activities.”
Before the end of the session, pupils were presented with certificates and prizes and congratulated for their efforts.
Keira added: “The students had a great time getting immersed in their drawings. They produced some very impressive work which they should be very proud of.”

The event marked the second Aimhigher Drawing from Nature day and the team is already planning a bigger event in 2006.
