An innovative foundation degree, which prepares students for a career in care management, has been praised for its high academic standards.
The foundation degree in Care Management, which is validated by the University of Luton, and delivered at Barnfield and Bedford colleges, was singled out for praise by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for Higher Education.
The University’s Dean of Partnerships, Professor David Barrett said: “The QAA confirms the University's commitment to professional education escalators.
“The high quality and standards which are demonstrated are due in part to the diligence of the teaching staff but also to the very receptive mature students who attend the course.
"The students then go on to deliver enhanced practice in their work settings. The University is proud to be involved with such partnership based activity.”
The foundation degree offers an opportunity for students to gain the vocational awards required for professional registration.
The reviewers said they had confidence in the standards and achievements of students, and the quality of learning opportunities provided.
The Agency, commissioned by the Higher Education Funding Council for England, looked at academic standards, achievements of students and the quality of students’ learning opportunities.
In its report, the Agency identified a wealth of good practice including the University’s close collaboration with the colleges and its successful recruitment and induction strategy designed to attract and meet the needs of managerial staff in local care facilities.
The report also praised the way it had integrated work-based and academic learning, the support given to students by staff and the quality of learning resources, in particular the high quality IT facilities.

Foundation degrees are designed to meet the needs of the modern workplace and are supported by businesses.
They are offered by universities in partnership with HE and FE colleges and, because of their flexibility, are open to people already in employment. They are particularly suited to people wishing to change their career.
Most courses take two years to complete – but may be offered part time over three or four years – after which students can transfer onto the final year of a degree programme.
