Staff at the University of Luton will be wrapping up warmly when they visit their new partners at Baikal University in Siberia.
The University has just signed a new education agreement with the Russian University, which promises future collaboration between the two institutions.
This follows the successful visit of Olga Onoshko, Vice Rector for International Affairs at Baikal State University of Economics and Law in Irkutsk, to Luton recently to establish closer links between Luton and Russia.
The Vice Rector was delighted with the success of her trip. She said in a letter of thanks to the University: “This was my first time in the UK and I felt at home, as if I was among my friends and relatives.
“I'm very thankful for the instructive meetings and the new contacts which I have established. Everybody was so open, friendly, and eager to share their knowledge.”
Olga’s trip was funded by Tempus, a programme set up following the fall of the Berlin Wall, to enable universities from across Europe to work together.
Luton currently works with Baikal University on a Tempus project which is developing a Master’s curriculum in Business. Olga’s University is now keen to extend that, so that Baikal can work with Luton Business School on its Business degrees and its Master’s in Business Administration (MBA).
Olga met staff at the University, including the Vice Chancellor Professor Les Ebdon, to discuss future collaboration, student welfare, curriculum development, quality assurance and to sign the agreement.
Professor Ebdon, said: “We were delighted to welcome the Vice Rector to Luton and she was very impressed with our facilities and resources. We discussed areas of mutual interest and the possibilities for both universities to work collaboratively.
“This agreement is another example of Luton’s growing international reputation for excellence. We are looking forward to working with our partners in Siberia and indeed further expanding Luton’s links across the globe.”
The University signed a similar agreement with a German business college earlier this year and plans to link up with more than six other institutions around Europe over the next 12 months.
