Leonti Fjodorov Estonian rugby star

An Estonian rugby star has arrived in Luton to kick-start his degree and has already been snapped up by the University rugby team, despite having a broken foot.

Leonti Fjodorov, who comes from the Estonian capital Tallinn, has come to Luton to study Internet Computing and is now busy getting to know his new University rugby team mates.

The 20-year-old is delighted with the warm welcome he received. “I had a really eventful Freshers’ Week. I met the captain of the rugby team at the Student Union Freshers’ party and he introduced me to the rest of the team. They were all very friendly and told me they were glad to have me on board.”

The open-side flanker, who has played for the Tallinn Tigers and the Estonian national squad, came straight to University after finishing the rugby season, where he broke his foot in the final game of the season, and still managed to score two tries!

Leonti, known as Leo, chose the University because he had heard about its excellent reputation for teaching and learning. He had also lived in Yorkshire and London and wanted to study somewhere different.

He said: “I did hear that Luton had a very good computing department and that the lecturers were very supportive. This was very important when choosing where to study. I also wanted to live somewhere new and I liked the fact that everything is so central.”

Now he’s looking forward to touring Italy with the University rugby team in February.
